The problems in teaching are many, among others, the preparation of teaching materials, lack of mastering teaching methods and unconducive atmosphere inside the class. Lampert (2001) also defines, “Teachers face some students who do not want to learn what they want to teach, some who already know it, or think they do, and some who are poorly prepared to study what is taught”. Some teachers should prepare themselves with all the components such as syllabus, learning plans, materials or media, methods, and assessment.
Methods are a systematic and scientific way of teaching any subject. It guides teacher how to teach and how his teaching may be effective. It is necessary for the teacher to know various types of methods and techniques of teaching English. The method can be defined as the process of planning, selection, and grading language materials and items, techniques of teaching, etc. Patel (2008) defines the term method as: ”a particular trick, strategy or contrivance used to accomplish an immediate objective. It must be consistent with a method and harmony with an approach as well.
Teaching methods consist of different principles and methods used by teachers to enable efficient learning in the classroom. This strategy is determined in part by the subject matter to be taught and partly by the nature of the learner. In order that certain teaching methods are appropriate and efficient, there must be relevant to the characteristics of the learner and the type of learning to be delivered, as each teaching method has its own advantages such as examples, The focus at this method is the translation of texts, grammar, and rote learning of vocabulary. There was no emphasis on speaking and listening comprehension because Latin and Greek were taught more as academic subjects rather than a means of oral communication. Whereas Direct method focus is on good pronunciation, with spontaneous use of the language, no translation, and little grammar analysis, the use of varied teaching methods makes the learning conditions to be effective, teaching methods is one of the most important elements in teaching activities.
As a language teacher it is very important to know the conditions of their students. Not only teacher, subject matter is important but also students’ cultural background and other personal factors emotional and psychological are equally important. Shaikh (2013), in International Journal of Science and Research/IJSR, language teachers have experimented with certain language teaching methods in isolation or combination and found one or more than one method effective and worth using. The researcher hopes this paper will help ESL teachers to gain an insight into developing an appropriate teaching material and selecting an effective, suitable teaching method that can practically be implemented in the classroom.
Research design is descriptive. This research is a type of research that provides an accurate portrayal of characteristics of a particular individual, situation, or group. Khotimah (2016) in Journal of Research and Advances in Mathematics Education, explains that contextual learning is a learning concept that helps the practitioners to connect between learning materials and the real world situation of the students, and encourage them to make the connection between they own knowledge and its application in their daily lives. These studies are a means of discovering new meaning, describing what exists, determining the frequency with which something occurs, and categorizing information. The descriptive research method refers to the method used to describe data and characteristics used to describe the population. Creswell (2007) states “the meaning of the descriptive qualitative method in research is to develop, test and evaluate research instruments and methods.
This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Lakea in september 2017. To get the data needed in this research, the researcher uses document analysis, observation sheet and interview guide to collect the data. Herdiansyah (2013), stated “research instrument is a test that is measuring because it contains about questions and statements that alternative answers have a specific answer standard, right wrong or scale answers. Data were analyzed descriptively in order tofind out the difficulties faced by the English teacher in using EFL teaching methods.
